Some Background on WriteAPrisoner.com…
We were originally established as an organization to help prison pen-pals receive letters from free world pen-pals. Inmates have been turning to us in the tens of thousands since the year 2000 to find friendship and moral support outside of prison walls. We post their pen-pal profiles, photos and contact information on WriteAPrisoner.com. You, the viewer, can then select which prisoners you would like to correspond with, after viewing all of the personal (interests, goals, etc.) and public (crime, release date, etc.) information. Unlike sites like Facebook and MySpace, here you will be able to research all information on the person you are contacting. Once you have selected an inmate to correspond with, you will have the option of sending your first message free of charge. Research shows that inmates who establish and maintain positive contacts outside of prison walls are less likely to return to prison. In fact, they are less likely to return to crime and substance abuse and are more likely to find employment and remain productive members of society. See our Why Write a Prisoner page for details.

Each time the 100-strong crowd assembled for the national Occupy for Prisoners day roared below the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago on Monday evening, the lights in a couple of windows would flicker on and off - prisoners up above, responding to the chants of "build schools, not prisons" and "we're with you, brothers and sisters."

"I can only imagine how excited they might have been to see that there are people in the free world that are concerned about them." said Christan Bufford, an organizer for juvenile justice with the Southwest Youth Collaborative. "When you are in there [detention], you feel like you are the only person in the world."

Experts say three prisons fail to provide adequate healthcare

This post has been updated. See the note below for details.

Gov. Jerry Brown's contention that California has fixed the problems of delivering medical care in its prisons collides with the first reviews of some of those prisons by court-appointed medical experts.

All three of the first prisons that were evaluated failed, though two were deemed capable of passing if fixes continue to be made. Healthcare at the third, RJ Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego, was so bad that the court's experts questioned how it could have been given "high" marks recently by the state Inspector General.
